FAQs
-
Aliwal Chess Club is a street-style chess community based in Singapore that redefines the game through art, culture, and connection. We started with just a couple of boards and a big dream: to make chess feel cool, casual, and creative again. What began in a small alley nearby Aliwal St. is now a growing movement.
-
Not at all! Whether you’ve never touched a piece or you’ve memorized every opening, you’re welcome here. We’re more about good vibes and shared stories than strict rules and ratings.
-
We usually host monthly pop-ups at unique spots and events around Singapore — sometimes at parks, sometimes in the middle of cultural districts. We will update monthly dates at the start of each month. Check our Instagram or WhatApp Channel for the latest dates and locations.
-
Nope — membership is free. Aliwal Chess Club has always been an open, come-as-you-are community. You don’t need to pay to be part of the club.
That said, some of our events (like night festivals, rooftop pop-ups, or collabs with other brands) may require ticket purchases — but we’ll always make that super clear upfront.
When we roll out Chess Boxing under the club, there will be a more structured membership for those joining that training community — to help us cover coaching, gear, and space costs.
But for street chess and our monthly meets? Always free.
-
Come solo, bring your crew, or make new friends on the board — we’ve got space (and good people) for everyone. Many of our regulars came alone the first time too.
-
We’re not just about chess — we’re about community, creativity, and culture. Expect neon boards, music in the air, and the occasional DJ set between games. We host chess meets that feel more like block parties than tournaments.
-
Yes! We love when families join us. Our events are friendly and open to all ages — from young kids learning the game to parents looking to unwind with a match.
-
Follow us on Instagram, or join our WhatsApp Channel, or subscribe to our newsletter. We drop updates, behind-the-scenes, and RSVP links regularly.
-
Yes, yes, yes. We live for collabs. Whether it’s painting chess pieces, DJing a night event, or designing custom boards — if you have a creative idea, let’s chat.
-
You can support us by joining as a member, buying our merch, donating, or just showing up and playing. Every smile, handshake, and chess match helps keep the spirit alive.
